Functions are essentially the purposes that we accomplish with language, e.g. stating, requesting, responding, greeting, parting, etc.
2.       Function cannot be accomplished without the forms of language e.g. morphemes, words, grammar rules, discourse rules, and other organizational competencies.
3.       Functions are sometimes directly related to forms
4.       Communication may be regarded as a combination of acts, a series of elements with purpose and intent.
5.       Second language learners need to understand the purpose of communication, developing an awareness of what the purpose of communicative act is and how to achieve that purpose through linguistic forms.
6.       Halliday differ seven functions of language
·         The instrumental function
